The Suffering Christ

Preacher:
Passage: Matt 16:21-28
Service Type:

The Suffering Christ

Matt 16:21   From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22  Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23  But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

24   Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

25  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

27  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

28  Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Introduction Matt 21:8  And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

9  And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

10  And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

11  And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

12   And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

13  And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

14  And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

  1. Same crowd cheering today will cry crucified him next week

Matt 27:22  Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

23  And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

24  When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25  Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

  1. As Long as he healed their sick, fed the hungry, and comforted the depressed they loved Him, but when He demanded they take up their cross and follow Him they cried crucified Him.
  2. We still cry for a Christ that will heal our sick
  3. Give us money
  4. Solve all our problems

III. He suffered mocking and cruel beatings

Mt 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

Matt 27:26   Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

  1. He went through mock trials. (3 Judicial and 3 by the high court of the Jewish religion)
  2. Tried in the dark of night - illegal
  3. Met with not all member present -  illegal
  4. False witnesses lied about him
  5. He spoke not a word in his defense

Matt 27:13  Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

14  And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

Conclusion: John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
