Luke 4:16  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17  And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

15  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

 Prophecies about Jesus’ ministry

I. Christ’s ministry will destroy the devil’s work

Prophecy:

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Fulfillment:

I John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

II. The Messiah will be humbled in order to serve mankind

Prophecy:

Psalm 8:5  For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

6  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Fulfillment:

Heb 2:7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

8  Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

III.  Jesus would teach parables

Prophecy:

Ps 78:1  Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

Fulfillment:

Matt 13:34  All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

IV.  Jesus would draw the Gentiles to himself

Prophecy:

Isaiah 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

Fulfillment:

John 12:19  The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

  1. And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
  2. The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying Sir, we would see Jesus     

V. Jesus would have  a miraculous ministry

Prophecy:

Isaiah 35:5  Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

  1. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

Fulfillment:

 Matt. 11:3  And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

  1. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
  2.  The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

VI. Jesus would be despised and rejected       

Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:3  He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Fulfillment:

Luke 4:28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

  1. And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

VII.  The Messiah will bring an end to sin

Prophecy:

Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Fulfillment:

Galatians 1:3  Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1. Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
  2. To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion:

Rev. 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
